Our Story
I have worked in the metal industry for 50 years undertaking an apprentiship in fitting and machining.
I was working in a foundry as manager when i had an accident with an angle grinder which caused severe damage to my left wrist.
It was during the recovery stage that i started modeling in clay but it had limitations to the kind of work I wanted to produce.I then switched to making models in wax. I was able to cast these at the foundry were I had worked.
I slowly developed a product line which I was able to sell on consignement through a few galleries. Then with the help of a loan I set up my own foundry building and all the equipment myself. Over the years I have increased the product line and also improved the quality of the modeling. This is were the internet is so handy as you can see the standard of other artists throughout the world.
I was later joined by my son who now runs the foundry, David. Between the two of use we have complete control of the casting and finishing processes. Having your own foundry lets you experiment with different techniques and reduces costs. Most artists have to rely on other foundries to cast and finish their work. Real bronze lasts forever and has a worth. it also allows a freedom of mounting of the piece as bronze has tremendous strength. There are also a lot of colours you can develop on the cast using heat and chemicals. I have always been fasinated in being able to turn an idea from a liquid, to a solid artform.
No matter how long you have been casting it is always exciting to break away the mold after pouring, to reveal what you have created. When pouring bronze everything has to be right the temperature of the metal and the heat of the ceramic shells. Sometimes you have a complete failure and have to start again.
